A trip to Library Street Collective in Detroit

When a good friend invited me to Detroit, I knew exactly where I would be going: Library Street Collective.
Opened by JJ and Anthony Curis, LSC has been on my list since we started The Studio. What began as a passion project, has grown into one of the most respected galleries in the country, showcasing acclaimed artists like Jammie Holmes and Nina Chanel.
The exhibition, Found in Translation, by New York-based artists Tiffany Alfonseca and Monica Hernandez was on display when I stopped by.
With themes of female empowerment and self-love seamlessly weaved throughout each portrait, the gallery’s white walls were flooded with vibrant colors. More than that though, the artists’ depictions provided perspective on the Dominican Diaspora and its cultural impact.
Detroit has a reputation as being America’s forgotten city. A beacon of global manufacturing, simply abandoned. But the people have remained resilient, and Motown is still very much alive. Library Street Collective - and this exhibition - is proof of just that.
Cheers.

Detroit’s a special spot. We first found ourselves there in the summer of 2022 catching up with Juniper Jones—an artist from the 313.
Hailing from the west side, Juniper is completely self taught.
With a body of work that centers around growth, transformation, and fluidity, Juniper's collection showcases his long sought desire for self love - an idea that was ultimately achieved when looking inward at the constants that shaped his life.
In Juniper's case that means family, relationships, and a city that he believes the world has unfairly written off—Detroit.

That’s it from us for now. Talk from the road.
