Frontier Boys Trip 9 | Riverside, California

A trip back home to the Inland Empire

I’m Riverside’s biggest fan. Sure it’s my hometown, but the city has truly made incredible strides in revitalizing its downtown. We have new restaurants, bars, an art scene, and even coffee shops that draw on the foam…crazy.

So, on my flight home from Miami, I decided to take the opportunity to explore my own city, and swing by The Cheech: a public-private partnership between the City of Riverside and Comedian Cheech Marin. Cheech is one of the most prominent collectors of Chicano art in the world, owning over 700 works. The two story museum houses both his private collection, as well as work from Chicano artists from across the globe.

I was most excited to see Bling Nails on Cesar Chavez Ave. by LA Artist Alfonso Gonzalez Jr. He’s been one of my favorites for some time and it’s special to see him on display in my hometown.

Riverside is often overlooked, and underrated. The underdog of SoCal. But biased or not, The Cheech is objectively world class.

Cheers.

Blake, a Frontier Boy

I’ll leave Riverside to Blake, but let me show you what makes Alfonso such a special artist–his style is so realistic it makes you feel like you’re in Southern California or more specifically, LA.

Whether you love or hate LA, it has a unique identity. One that at times is difficult to capture, and often wrongly portrayed. But, Alfonso does just that—he captures what LA is really like. Accurately and truthfully. The good and the bad. The real LA experience.

I wonder where his Local Joint is in the city of Angels? One day we gotta find out.

That’s it from us for now. Talk from the road.
