Frontier Boys Trip 8 | Miami, Florida

Catching up with Roscoè B. Thické III at his new studio in Little Haiti

Most of my trips are planned around visiting a specific gallery or museum in a city, but when photographer, and dear friend, Roscoè B. Thické III invited me to his new studio in Miami’s Little Haiti I was on the next flight out.

Flying to Miami is never direct, and this time getting there meant spending a night in Denver. Definitely worse places to be stuck overnight — could’ve been Orlando.

Roscoè is a photographer whose work examines themes of family, community, and intimacy. I met Roscoè more than a year ago, and even after a Mass MoCA residency and an Emmy Award, he’s most proud of his reputation as a husband, father, and friend.

In his studio filled with works from fellow Miami artists and a clock permanently set to 3:05, we discussed what’s next for the photographer—and it’s special.

Where to next?

Cheers.

Blake, a Frontier Boy

As Blake mentioned, we first met Roscoè nearly a year ago when filming the Studio Sundays series and we learned quickly—Roscoè’s life story is unlike any other.

Roscoè didn’t always think he was going to be a photographer…He didn’t even think that was a viable career option or as he put it “a job one could have.”

Instead, after graduating from Miami Norland Senior High School, Roscoè traveled the world serving his country. These travels took him to diverse lands such as Jordan, Iraq, and South Korea. While traveling though, Roscoè picked up a camera and never put it down.

Today you can see the influences in his practice—it’s as if the service to his country combined with personal experiences allows him to see the world through his own distorted yet divine point of view.

Duality

Everyone know’s he’s a special talent, but not enough people know him as a person—humble, loving, caring, and proud as hell of where he’s from.

So, in an ode to the 305 and the “Pork N Bean Project” that raised him, we caught up with Roscoè over the course of 3 days in Liberty City.

Alongside the video release, and in collaboration with Roscoè, we released his first ever photo book and four of his favorite prints. Somehow/someway, there’s a few left.
