I couldn’t sleep, so I decided to book a 5am flight from Miami to Cincinnati.

I usually do prep before landing in a city, but I decided to just hit Reddit on my way to the airport this time. And since everyone on the forums said to check out the Miller Gallery in Cincinnati, I found my spot in no time.

The gallerists were super welcoming and think what we’re doing is cool so they gave us a full tour of their solo exhibition by Rene Romero Schuler. Rene is an artist from Chicago who is best known for her depictions of feminine figures, using trowels and palette knives to construct her pieces.

She had a ton of work on display ranging in sizes, and as beautiful as it was, I couldn’t help but think how terrifying it would be if I was in a dark room filled with her characters.

All in all, I really enjoyed her work and Ohio though. Don't sleep on the midwest.

Cheers.

Blake, a Frontier Boy

Rhode Island, the smallest state in the United States—that’s where we found ourselves for episode 10 of Local Joints.

But, to be honest, when we heard about the opportunity to work with a glassblower, it didn’t matter where she was located. Not only did the opportunity include a new artist and story, but it was also a new medium for us. We weren’t going to pass up the opportunity. We were there.

So, enough said, meet Sara Ahli.

In her mesmerizing creations, Sara fuses the delicate qualities of glass to ask questions about the human experience. Questions that took us from her local cafe, to her studio, to the hot shop — the place she hones her technical skills and the intricate dance between fire and molten glass.

And while Sara may not have all the answers to her questions, she still seeks to inspire others to confront their own limitations and embrace the beauty that can arise from welcoming the unknown.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the hot shop was hot. I mean HOT. It was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside of the kiln and over 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit inside the kiln itself.

The Ocean State, a spot we won’t forget anytime soon—hot but memorable.

That’s it from us for now. Talk from the road.
