Frontier Boys Trip 3 and Local Joint 8 | Puerto Rico and New York

An Outdoor Graffiti Ruin and an NYC dive bar

I still can’t believe Frontier took me to the Motherland.

It was a journey - two delays, a flight cancellation in Orlando, and a distraught Frontier Mom.

But, we made it to Aguadilla ready to eat, dance, and explore the local art scene. We got helado in Lares, relaxed at the water falls in San Sebastián, and explored the Dreamland Gallery.

The Dreamland Gallery is an outdoor graffiti ruin that was once a US Air Force hanger. It’s somewhat tough to find, but once you do, you’re flooded with vibrant graffiti that colors the wreckage. And, with over 50 artists represented, it’s become a local hangout of sorts—A skate spot, a vintage car meet up, and a place to just kick it.

Graffiti has a rich history in Puerto Rico, with deep ties to the island’s independence movements. The work here is no different, and provides an insight into the kaleidoscope of perspectives shaping Puerto Rico today.

Not sure I’ll ever be able to top this trip, but where to next?

¡Hasta la próxima! 🇵🇷

Blake, a Frontier Boy

After Blake wrapped up in Puerto Rico, he met up with the team in New York. There, we caught up with photographer Sol Rapson for episode 8 of Local Joints.

We managed to catch Sol — who’s rarely in one place for long — on a sticky New York City day right before he headed to Cuba for a shoot.

Safe from the blistering humidity outside, Sol grabbed a seat at Lucy’s — his favorite East Village dive bar — before it opened for the night. In a far-ranging conversation, he spoke about how a trip to Joshua Tree sparked his interest in photography, the responsibility he feels as a documenter, a close encounter with some bears, and the importance of cultural currency when traveling (whether with animals or people).

Surrounded by a few felt stained pool tables, we covered it all. Until, of course, Lucy the bar owner told us it was time to open up shop for the night.

We ❤️ NY.

That’s it from us for now. Talk from the road.
